He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.

What's the #1 reason why Jesus came?

Doctrine is Practical

I have in my library a book by the spiritual father of a quasi-Christian cult. It argues that structured doctrine and systematized theology are contrary to the spirit of Jesus' ministry.

The idea that Christ is anti-doctrine is a foundational belief of that cult. No idea is further from the truth. The word doctrine simply means "teaching." And it's ludicrous to say that Christ is anti-teaching. The central imperative of His Great Commission is the command to teach (Matthew 28:18-20).

Breaking Free From Worry by Knowing Jesus

Have you ever been gripped by fear? You know the feeling. A shiver downs your spine. Your stomach has a sinking sensation. Your mouth goes dry. Maybe it happened when you were in a life-threatening situation, or at least you thought you were.

Some people actually thrive on fear and will spend their hard-earned dollars to be scared out of their minds. They will go to a movie because they have heard it is really scary, or go to an amusement park to ride the most extreme ride. But like it or not, fear is a very real emotion that most of us would rather avoid.

Preaching Matters: The Matters That Matter

Preaching matters. I write those words not only to echo what others across the centuries more eloquently than I have affirmed, but as a play on words because there are certain preaching-related matters that matter immensely—matters that ought to be distinguished and duly appreciated. Three Pauline texts bring these matters to the fore. Before exploring these passages, we do well to account for the philosophical times in which the apostle wrote, as well as our own.Paul lived in a premodern world.

Is the Bible Reliable for Truth about Jesus Christ?

One of the most interesting stories of last year involved the CERN laboratory outside of Geneva, Switzerland. On Wednesday, September 10, 2008, scientists turned on the Large Hadron Collider, an eight-billion dollar experiment, designed to see what happens when protons crash into one another at ridiculously fast speeds. “We can now look forward,” said the project director, “to a new era of understanding about the origins and evolution of the universe.” Christians can and should be excited about this kind of research. Our knowledge of reality, however, is not limited to what science can prove.

Why it is Good to Give Thanks

Every Sunday morning for over 20 years, with very few exceptions, I have gathered with a group of prayer partners to read a Psalm and then spend an hour in worship-based prayer. Typically, we have started at 6:15 AM. The worship in the Word is sweet and the Spirit always guides us as we take time to specifically focus on prayers for the Sunday services of the church and all God wants to do through them.
